mr. x -- our car: wr7 for the 2016/2017 season will be working to create what we hope will be our first ever electric entry into the formula student competition. we will also be developing new ideas on a test vehicle to prove our concepts for the following year. rest assured that when wr7 is ready for the public, our launch event will show it off in all its glory. browse left and right to explore each function group and see our targets for the season. charlie williams project manager alistair fisher chief engineer matt hill manufacturing manager shafiul alam testing manager powertrain powertrain covers the engine, shifting mechanism, differential and drive shafts, engine cooling system, exhaust system, air intake, fuel intake and we will also be working closely with the electronics team to control the engine systems. last year we used a ktm single cylinder 450cc bike engine with fuel injection. rules dictate that all air that goes into the engine must pass through a 20mm restriction, we therefore make a custom plenum to smooth out the air flow into the engine. the cooling system consists of a single side mounted radiator and the exhaust is the stock muffler from the bike with a few modifications and a custom exhaust pipe. we use a limited slip differential made by drexler and new to the car last year is a steering wheel button actuated pneumatic shifter with an onboard air compressor. boris diamond powertrain manager this year we will be replicating the powertrain system from last year but with a few changes. developing a new muffler to comply with noise regulations at fsuk. we will be developing a new plenum to improve the air intake setup. constructing carbon fibre body panels and side pods, helping to direct cold air around the engine and force air through the radiator. electronics and daq electronics and data acquisition (or ‘daq’) are two separate disciplines, although they work together in unison. the car relies on a few key electronic subsystems. the engine control unit or ecu ensures all engine events occur at just the right time for maximum performance. an electronic, or “drive by wire” throttle controls engine power. smaller systems include the steering wheel, various safety devices and 12v power management, amongst many other things, connected by the wiring loom. a data acquisition system will capture data from the car which is invaluable for both real time performance monitoring and post-race/test analysis. having trustworthy data lets the team quickly and effectively verify designs. parth malhan electronics and daq manager to go above and beyond the basics we are going to be focusing on three different tasks throughout the year: data acquisition system - we will create a circuit powered by a myrio which measures many different variables which we can then use to analyse how the car performs and create systems which use the data to enhance the performance of the car. electronic throttle control - we will work on wiring and programming an electronic throttle. this will allow more accuracy and precision when it comes to controlling the car. it also means we can create electrical systems which rely on controlling the throttle traction control - our final project will be a traction control system which uses the daq to recognise when the car has lost traction and then adjusts the air/fuel mixture in the engine (via the electronic throttle) to help the car regain traction, improving control and speed within the car composites the composites team are a manufacturing team who drive relentlessly for light weighting. as a lighter car will turn quicker, brake later, and accelerate quicker. this year we are also striving to minimise drag. typically, we make out parts out of carbon fibre, although we are not restricted to it, we also use foams and metal honeycombs to strengthen our designs. our goals for this year include: manufacture a flat ‘ground-effect’ floor for the first time design and manufacture of an all new front impact attenuator assembly design and manufacture a low drag side pod for the first time manufacture lightweight body pan
